The 48 Bench from Finn Juhl’s 48 Series is considered one of his most iconic designs.
It was conceived as an attempt to merge art with functionality, and is regarded almost as a sculpture. The backrest appears to float in the air - detached from the armrests and legs, thanks to hidden joints and precise construction that give it a sense of lightness and airiness.
The series was first presented to the American public at the Good Design exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in the 1950s, and it was met with great success among American audiences, contributing to Juhl’s breakthrough in the United States.
