This is one of Sori Yanagi's most iconic designs. Originally designed in 1953, a year after he opened his studio in Tokyo, and slightly redesigned in 1994, this masterpiece is now produced in Niigata, through the collaborative work of nearly fifteen factories and most of its parts are still created by hand. Under its usual appearance, every detail has been carefully considered, to create an object that is both functional and beautiful. The wide base promises to heat the water quickly, while the handles are carefully designed to connect for lifting the kettle and holding it firmly. The place perfectly embodies Yanagi's approach to design: as he said in 2002, "I try to make things that humans feel are useful and practical in our daily lives."
On a lighter note, Japanese kettles don't whistle naturally they tend to sit on top of a stove in a warm kitchen in the winter to keep the room moist like a modern humidifier and are always ready with hot water for making tea and cooking.
